Quick answer

What is print mounting?

Print mounting attaches a printed sheet to another sheet, chipboard, board, or rigid backing to make the finished piece thicker or sturdier.

It is commonly used for thick business cards, counter cards, tabletop displays, mounted prints, signs, packaging inserts, and presentation pieces.

When mounting helps

Some printed pieces need more than paper alone.

Mounting adds thickness or rigidity when a printed piece needs to stand up, stay flat, handle repeated use, or simply be thicker than the stock it was printed on.

Thicker pieces

Mount printed sheets together when the finished piece needs more thickness.

Rigid backing

Mount print to chipboard or board when it needs more support.

Counter & tabletop pieces

Useful for pieces that need to sit or stand on a counter, desk, or display.

More finishing

Mounted pieces can also be trimmed, laminated, scored, die cut, assembled, or packed.

Compare finishing methods

Mounting, laminating, and die cutting do different things.

A project may use one of these processes or combine several of them. The right setup depends on the finished piece and how it will be used.

MountingAdds thickness or rigidity by attaching print to another sheet or backing.
LaminatingAdds a film over the printed surface for protection or a different finish.
Die cuttingCuts the piece into a shape or adds tabs, windows, holes, or rounded corners.
Materials & finishing

The backing and finishing depend on the job.

The printed sheet, desired thickness, backing material, adhesive, trim, and final use all affect the setup. Mounted pieces can also move into other finishing steps.
